The Speech Accent Archive

Posted on Friday, February 01, 2008

The Speech Accent Archive, maintained by Steven H. Weinberger of George Mason University, contains speech samples of speakers of English from various language backgrounds. It is useful not only for linguists but also for teachers and students who want to study the accents of different English speakers.

Features:

• Same elicitation paragraph for all speakers, which contains most of the consonants, vowels and clusters of standard American English

• Phonetic transcriptions of all samples provided, along with speakers' phonological generalizations and biographical data

• Archive browsable by native language, geographical region and native phonetic inventory
